pH is the acidity or alkalinity of a liquid or a semi-solid. Proper pH levels are vital for safe
drinking water, successful crop production, and many other vital processes in
industrial, agricultural and environmental applications. pH paper and pocket testers are available
for basic pH level assessments, but for accurate and scientific results, electronic
meters are the standard. Meters
range in complexity and cost ranging from basic portables to research lab
options. A pH meter is an electronic device, generally consisting of a meter
and a probe (a glass electrode) used for measuring the pH of a liquid, and in
specialized uses, probes are available for measuring semi-solids.

1968 (First Generation) Cougar - Basics
The first generation (1967 – 1970) Mercury Cougar is one of the most iconic American Classic cars. Representing an ambitious culture that constantly strives to best all comers and itself, this series was produced by Ford Motors Lincoln-Mercury division on the basic Ford Mustang model platform. In other words – The original Cougars were basically Big Fancy Mustangs.
The base model ’68 Cougar featured a small block, 289 V8 Windsor engine and a number of stylish, unique features including “Hidden” headlight valences, sequential turn signals, and elaborated grills front and back. The hidden headlights and the sequential turn signals were relatively cutting edge systems for the time. Also available, the upgrade version “XR-7”, featuring higher end interior finishes and larger engine options.
Referred to often as a “Muscle Car”, the ’68 Cougar should be more accurately called a “Pony Car” as the language more appropriately illustrates the cars’ front end dominated handling and esthetics via very long hood lengths and very short back ends, and also in reference to it’s very close relative, the Mustang.
Named “Car of the Year” by Motor Trend in 1967, the debut year, later generation Cougars featured a marked shift from performance vehicle to luxury vehicle, including total restyling of body types and target owner demographics. Within the first generation years, very little varied other than slight modifications (For instance – side marker lights), and upgrade options such as convertible models, hood scoops, and an increasing array of engine size and type options. 1973 marked the end of the Mustang based Cougar and the shift towards contemporary year personal luxury car models such as the contemporary year Torino or Thunderbird, and the end of the “Pony Car” years for the Cougars.
As opposed to the Cougar’s vehicular sibling, the agile and sporty Mustang, the first generation Cougar was longer wheel based, aggressively stylish car with similar power but arguably more prestige and presence. Sexy advertising for these cars, featuring attractive females and snarling big cats represents a time and a place gone but indeed treasured by classic car enthusiasts. And, the cars themselves most definitely stand as a symbol for the generation from which they came.
